Study: Pre-excision chemo might encourage breast cancer metastasis

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is intended to shrink breast tumors before surgery, allowing surgeons to remove less tissue, but new research published in Science Translational Medicine shows the practice might encourage metastasis. Preoperative chemotherapy affects "tumor microenvironments of metastasis," or immune cell "on-ramps" on blood vessels, in a way that is more conducive to metastasis, the study in mice and human tissue revealed.
