Solar eclipses have long inspired unease and many cultures have seen the phenomenon as a bad omen, but that unease also inspired modern astronomy, explains Maya Wei-Haas. Several ancient civilizations believed eclipses were so important that they learned to predict them by carefully tracking astrological movements and unusual events to create calendars.
