A new method for creating organs for transplant uses pig organs that are dissolved, leaving a protein scaffold that is then rebuilt with human cells, according to findings presented at the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. Biotech company Miromatrix says it has used the method, called decel/recel, to create new livers, but it used pig cells instead of human cells, so the livers will be tested first in animal transplants.
