A study presented at the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting showed that 40.5% of patients who visited the emergency department for diabetes-related complications and were referred to a diabetes specialty center did not revisit the ED within one year, compared with 24.6% in the control group. Researchers used a cohort of 1,211 patients with a mean age of 50 and found that high-frequency return patients, or those who had more than 10 revisits in the following year, had fewer ED readmissions after being referred to a diabetes specialist than moderate-frequency patients.
