Adolescents with type 2 diabetes and severe obesity who underwent bariatric surgery experienced diabetes remission, improved cardiovascular risk factors and significantly better weight reduction, compared with those who used medical therapies, according to a study in JAMA Pediatrics. Researchers examined 242 adolescents ages 13 to 18 from the Teen-LABS study and 699 patients ages 10 to 17 from the TODAY study and also found that 23% of Teen-LABS patients had subsequent surgery and/or hospital readmission for procedures like cholecystectomy, and 3% of TODAY patients had complications requiring hospital admission after undergoing bariatric surgery.
