A study in Diabetes Metabolism Research and Reviews showed that HIV-positive adults exposed to antiretroviral therapy had a significantly higher risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome than those not exposed to ART. UK researchers analyzed data on 20,178 adults from 41 observational studies and found an association between ART and significant increases in fasting plasma glucose levels in studies with mean ART duration of more than 18 months, but not in those with a mean ART duration of less than 18 months.
