Study examines co-occurrence of type 1 diabetes, celiac disease in youths

Children with type 1 diabetes were almost three times more likely to develop celiac disease autoantibodies than those without type 1 diabetes, researchers reported in Pediatrics. It's not clear whether type 1 diabetes could lead to celiac disease or overlapping environmental factors trigger disease co-occurrence, but experts say the findings could support earlier diagnosis of celiac, which could help avoid complications.
