Oil companies would be better off if they eliminated quarterly dividends and instead paid investors sizable special dividends only when market conditions are favorable, according to Mawer Investment Management equity analyst Justin Anderson. This model would help producers lower the cost of capital and bring down the equity risk premium when prices are low, Anderson argues.
