Natural gas production in Pennsylvania hit another record in 2016 as shale drillers extracted about 5.1 trillion cubic feet of gas, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection. However, the number of new shale gas wells continued to decline, with only 1,321 permits issued last year, down from a peak of 3,560 permits in 2011.
