Gulf of Mexico medium sour crude, not shale oil, makes up the largest share of US oil exports, according to Morningstar's Sandy Fielden. US crude has been stealing market share from OPEC in Asia recently because West Texas Intermediate trades at a discount compared with the regional Dubai benchmark.
