Nuclear reactors that float on the ocean or are moored to the seabed could be a cost-effective and safe alternative to building nuclear power plants on land, some engineers contend. Marine reactors can be tsunami-proofed, and according to MIT nuclear engineer Jacopo Buongiorno, the electricity produced could be one-third cheaper than from land-based reactors because marine reactors can be mass-produced.
