Acetaminophen plus ibuprofen, available without a prescription, worked as well as opioid drugs for relief of short-term severe pain in patients with broken bones and sprains, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researcher Andrew Chang said ibuprofen and acetaminophen target different pain receptors.
