Health care organizations should have a disaster recovery and data backup plan included in their contingency plans as they prepare for potential natural disasters, such as Hurricane Irma, according to an HHS Office for Civil Rights' news release. "The HIPAA Security Rule's requirements with respect to contingency planning also help HIPAA-covered entities and business associates assure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of electronic [protected health information] during an emergency such as a natural disaster," the OCR said.
