During the first quarter, US household debt rose to a record $12.7 trillion, topping the previous peak in Q3 of 2008, when the global financial crisis began, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said. Student loans are swiftly becoming a greater proportion of the total, rising from 3.3% in 2003 to 10.6% today.
