Predictive models based on machine-learning algorithms were able to identify asymptomatic carriers of the malaria parasite by detecting volatile biomarkers in a 333-person study in Kenya, researchers reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "It is interesting that the symptomatic and asymptomatic infections were different from each other as well as from healthy people," said senior investigator Mark Mescher of Pennsylvania State University and ETH Zurich.
