US drug overdose death rates increased to 18.5 cases per 100,000 people for the 12-month period ending September 2016 from 16.1 per 100,000 for the 12 months prior, according to a quarterly report from the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. Deaths from drug overdoses continued to climb from 2015, when a record 52,404 people died, and 33,091 of those overdoses were attributed to opioids.
