Earth is in the midst of a sixth mass extinction involving thousands of the world's species, and it's more severe than previously thought, according to findings published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study examined more than 27,000 terrestrial vertebrates, dividing Earth's land masses into 22,000 sections to examine declines of species within each one.
