Destructively intensive farming practices have severely degraded one-third of the land on earth, leaving 1.3 billion people at risk of increased hunger, water shortages and poverty as their farmlands fail, warns the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The decline could also intensify conflicts as people compete for fertile land, says UNCCD Executive Secretary Monique Barbut.
