Veterinarians and conservationists relocated 520 African elephants over 150 miles to a new wildlife reserve in hopes that the move will protect the elephants from conflict with humans and repopulate the Nkhotakota park, where elephant numbers have dwindled because of poaching over the past 20 years. Moving the 6-ton animals in their family groups was a challenge managed with tranquilizers and great care, and rangers have been trained to manage threats in the elephants' new home.
