A 25-year-old mare in Warren County, N.J., with equine herpesvirus was euthanized Nov. 3 and the farm placed under a 21-day quarantine. The virus is contagious among horses and can spread to llamas and alpacas but not to other domestic animals or to people, and horse owners are advised to alert a veterinarian about horses that display neurologic or other signs of the virus.
