An international survey of more than 4,500 people determined the world's 10 most charismatic animals, then revealed that at least half of survey respondents were unaware that lions, gorillas, cheetahs, leopards and giraffes are at high risk of extinction, though awareness was higher about the plight of polar bears, tigers, pandas and elephants. The findings, published in PLOS Biology, could be due to ubiquitous marketing that depicts endangered animals, leading to the perception that the animals themselves are plentiful.
