The World Health Organization issued guidelines to reduce the use of certain antimicrobials in food-producing animals, but the WHO admits the guidelines draw from low-quality evidence. The AVMA and member veterinarians are committed to science-based antimicrobial stewardship, and a strategy centered on selecting and correctly administering the right antibiotic for a given patient and strategically using antibiotics to prevent and control disease is the best way to protect human and animal health.
