Severe and potentially life-threatening complications for US women during childbirth rose 45% from 2006 to 2015, according to data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project. The rate of blood transfusions rose by 54%, an indicator of increased risk of bleeding, while kidney failure, shock and sepsis rates more than doubled.
