Swiss researchers evaluated 968 pregnant women and found that those who took metformin to treat pre-gestational diabetes were at a higher risk of experiencing adverse outcomes tied to diabetes, but not the drug, compared with the control group. The findings in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology revealed that metformin users with pre-gestational diabetes were at an increased risk for spontaneous abortion or stillbirth, preterm birth and assisted delivery, compared with controls, but no such risks were seen in women taking metformin for other indications.
