An average of 11.2% of people worldwide suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, yet only about half seek medical attention, German researcher Paul Enck wrote in Nature Reviews Disease Primers. Enck said about 20% of IBS patients also have other gastrointestinal disorders, as well as higher rates of psychiatric conditions, and that the gut microbiome definitely plays a role in IBS.
