Country Clubs cultivate the next generation of golfers
Golf course operators are adding new programs to grow the next generation of golfers, a cohort that plays the game considerably less than Americans aged 50 and older. Northfield Country Club in Northfield, Vt., established an after-school program to introduce kids to the game while the Mountain Course in Incline Village, Nev., launched Family Days, a program in which kids play for free with a paying adult on a shortened course. Vegan dishes, healthy snack bars top food trends for 2013
The past year has brought many changes to the U.S. food scene -- including fleeting mashup dishes such as the Cronut -- but other trends, including high-end vegan food and throwback appetizers, deviled eggs and lobster rolls, are here to stay, writes Andrew Bender. Restaurants have also begun serving more octopus and Korean flavors and consumers are replacing traditional meals with bars packed with nutritious produce and protein. Golf courses improve environmental impact
Golf courses around the country are changing their reputation for being unsustainable and environmentally unfriendly by overhauling irrigation systems and adding natural plants and grasses to fairways. North Carolina State University's Lonnie Poole golf course even became a certified Audubon International Signature Golf Course Sanctuary by doing away with using potable water and creating a habitat for wildlife such as deer, foxes and raccoons. Clubs serve members better with new valet, shipment programs
Country clubs are going above and beyond to provide exceptional service to members and visitors such as St. Andrews Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla., which uses a program called Zingle to send members a text when their car is waiting for them at the valet stand. Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Fla., uses a service that ships members' golf clubs anywhere in the country, even on a tight schedule. The service has become "an important part of delivering on our overall member-satisfaction promise," says Buddy Antonopoulos, head golf professional at Medalist.
