Becoming a Dunkin' franchisee in New York allowed Santina Christian to forge a path as an entrepreneur -- a path that her daughter intends to follow as well. Christian emphasizes that franchise businesses are "owned locally by members of your community" and calls for lawmakers to "support policy that protects and uplifts the franchising model, allowing more constituents to go into business for themselves, but not by themselves."

The Global Leadership Enhancement and Mentoring Network, founded by Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf President Sanjiv Razdan, seeks to close the parity divide for women and other underrepresented groups through mentorship and development opportunities, and has, to date, paired industry executives and leaders with 300 mentees. "It is true what they say about being a mentor -- you often learn more than your mentee. It reinforces that we are all dealing with similar issues and having someone outside of your organization to talk with in a confidential environment is simply invaluable," says Tracy Steinwand, vice president of operations and training for COBS Bread, who was both mentor and mentee in the program.

Career Progression: Developing Leaders
Mentorship is a key way to develop women leaders, but to form real connections, leaders need to become storytellers, sharing their personal journeys with other women, and lead with compassion, authenticity and curiosity. Sharing stories about struggles has "made me much more relatable ... more human," says Casey Foss, chief commercial officer at West Monroe. "And to be honest, those are the stories that I find myself sharing all the time. It's not my accolades or my success."

Empower women to make them and your workplace thrive

Chances are good that you don't need to bring in outside talent to spark better productivity and ideas at work; chances are you already have such employees, and they're women whose abilities have yet to be noticed or tapped, writes leadership coach Joel Garfinkle. Rachel Botsman, an author, teacher and a leading expert on trust, defines trust as "a confident relationship with the unknown," which, Botsman says, means integrity is more important than transparency since that reduces the need for trust. "People's confidence comes more from a belief that you know what you're doing -- capability, and I know why you are doing it -- character. Put simply, it comes from not just doing things but doing the right things," says Botsman.

DEI and Company Culture
Diversifying the wine industry is at the top of many women's minds, but calling that out with terms like "women winemakers" feels redundant and cringe-worthy to some. Many women in the industry share sentiments like Priyanka French, winemaker at Signorello Estate, who said, "The vines don't know or care if you are a man or a woman," and Françoise Peschon, who said, "I never see a 'Men Winemaker' lot! Wouldn't that be funny?"
