Independent maintenance, repair and overhaul companies can offer more experience and lower costs when it comes to aircraft maintenance programs, but there is more they can do to set themselves apart from original equipment manufacturers, says James Elliott of IFS. Artificial intelligence's potential for reducing electronic waste lies in its applications for developing sustainable materials and reducing the harmful effects of plastics. "We want to develop AI in a way that is sustainable, benefits people and society as a whole, and focuses on solving important challenges such as climate change," says Andrus Ansip, vice president of the European Commission.
Energy companies are shifting to prescriptive maintenance to achieve "better-quality data, earlier problem detection, more timely and accurate response, and perhaps of the most importance, less reliance on manual knowledge capture," Sheila Kennedy writes. One example is Devon Energy, which has shifted scheduling for liquid tank haul-offs from manually created spreadsheets to analytics software that fills out spreadsheets automatically.

Energy-efficient processes, carbon capture and storage and a combination of other technologies can help industrial companies decarbonize, according to this McKinsey analysis. "The optimum mix of decarbonization options will vary from facility to facility, even within the same sector, because local factors determine which ones are most practical or economical," the authors write.
Autonomous robots will eventually take jobs that are most dangerous for humans, such as inspecting damaged nuclear equipment or setting up facilities on Mars, Kevin Maney suggests. Australian firm Marathon Targets, for example, has developed artificial intelligence-equipped robots that simulate live environments for military training.
