  • DISH's Ergen sees "window closing" on wireless network plans
    Industry consolidation could jeopardize DISH Network Chairman Charlie Ergen's plans to provide national wireless broadband service, the executive conceded in an interview, saying the "window is closing" for partnering with a carrier. He blamed the Federal Communications Commission for moving too slowly in approving a waiver DISH needs to deploy its satellite spectrum for terrestrial services.   • Microsoft brings Xbox closer to wireless, Web-based devices
    Smartphones and tablets running new Windows Phone software will be able to work as second screens for games and other Xbox offerings as part of Microsoft's plans to connect a range of devices to the gaming console under Windows 8 software, the company is expected to announce today.   • DEG: Home entertainment spending trends upward slightly
    Through the first nine months of 2012, consumer spending on home entertainment has increased by 1% to $12.34 billion, compared with $12.22 billion in the same period of 2011, according to DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group. Third-quarter sales grew only 0.24% from a year ago to $3.94 billion from $3.93 billion. The increase is being led by gains in Blu-ray disc sales, electronic distribution and subscription streaming, the market research firm reported.
