- Verizon's app store is set to close by March
Verizon is shutting down its application store, Verizon Apps, in 2013 and will instead direct Android and BlackBerry users to stores run by Amazon and Google Play. Customers will be alerted to the change in January and the store will be gone by March. Verizon says it will continue to pay developers throughout the shutdown process. VentureBeat

- Apple's lawsuit against Google is thrown out by federal judge
A Wisconsin federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit Apple filed against Google over patents. Google acquired the patents when it took over Motorola in May, and it is required to license the patents to other companies. Apple and Microsoft say the royalties on the patents are too high. The judge questioned whether she had the authority to hear Apple's claim before tossing the suit. Reuters

- Ericsson looks to increase service sales as Q3 profit slips
Mobile network infrastructure supplier Ericsson says it expects an increase in its network management and other services even as its network sales slip. Slower orders meant a 42% third-quarter profit loss for Ericsson, but the company still expects a 4% to 6% growth in its key segments of the overall market. Reuters

- Regulators issue EU-wide mandate for more 4G spectrum
The 27 EU member states have until June 2014 to open up an additional 120 MHz of radio spectrum for 4G Long-Term Evolution services. EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes said the additional spectrum is needed to ensure "harmonized liberalization" among member states and to address an estimated 26% increase in broadband demand by 2015. - Malware writers flock to Android, but U.S. dodges the bullet
The mobile marketplace was flooded with more infected Android applications in the third quarter, but less than 0.3% of North American smartphone users have been affected. Finnish security firm F-Secure says it identified 50,000 malicious Android programs in the third quarter and 40% of infected smartphones are in China, Russia or elsewhere in Eastern Europe. eWeek

- Wireless companies: We comply with privacy laws
Communications companies say they comply with legal requests from law enforcement for privacy data. A new FBI report is said to accuse some wireless companies of "hindering" investigations by not releasing information. "[W]e review all incoming legal requests to determine what information is requested and whether disclosure of that information is lawfully permitted pursuant to the type of request submitted," Cricket Communications spokesman Greg Lund said.
