- Grid modernization to drive push for new storage technologies
The maturation of the smart grid will drive robust demand for new technologies that can capture, store and rapidly deploy surplus energy, according to a forecast from Pike Research. The market for so-called "spinning reserves" will grow by 40% through 2022 -- generating revenue of $578 million -- with "newer forms of energy storage" expected to play a larger role, the research firm said. - Reid may take a last shot at a cybersecurity bill this year
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., plans to bring cybersecurity legislation to the floor in a last-ditch effort to reach a compromise before the year ends. Republican opponents of an earlier-rejected bill say they are no closer than they were in August to resolving the issues. But James Lewis of the Center for Strategic and International Studies says a try during the lame-duck session is still worth the effort as it could "shape the landscape for the next Congress."
