  • We Energies gets FERC nod to buy Wis. wind farm for $27M
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has signed off on We Energies' planned $27 million acquisition of the 30-megawatt Montfort Wind farm in Iowa County, Wis., from FPL Energy American Wind. Once the acquisition is complete, We Energies intends to dissolve Badger Windpower, the company that currently owns and runs the wind farm, and a related power purchase deal. • Analysts: Renewables face post-election challenges
President Barack Obama's re-election is good for the renewable-energy sector, but other factors are likely to hold back industry growth, analysts said. The tough negotiations expected over how to address the federal deficit will make it difficult to hold on to all energy tax incentives, analysts said. Moreover, cheap natural gas and the fulfillment of many state renewable energy commitments are expected to slow down the renewable-energy industry's expansion, they added. Analyst Sarah Ladislaw at the Center for Strategic and International Studies expects "an all-out battle for the status quo." CNNMoney (11/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Likely PTC extension not enough to avert 2013 losses, analysts say
The wind-energy Production Tax Credit will likely be extended either in the lame duck session or at the start of the new Congress in January, but it will likely be too late to stave off losses in the industry next year, writes Herman Trabish. The PTC will likely get a one-year extension as part of a broader tax legislation, said Jonathan Weisgall, vice president for legislative and regulatory affairs at MidAmerican Energy Holdings. "The year-to-year cycle is what we are stuck with," he added. Greentech Media (11/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  Policy Watch
  • Grassley: Fate of PTC linked to fiscal deficit negotiation
Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said he supports an extension of the wind-energy Production Tax Credit but admitted that the tax incentive's future depends on the outcome of negotiations over the fiscal deficit. "As important as I think wind energy is, we've got a big fiscal problem here," Grassley said. However, he added that no "single energy tax incentive should be singled out over others" outside of a comprehensive tax reform plan. Reuters (11/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
