- Most board members still lack tech knowledge, poll says
Most board members of some of the nation's leading firms lack even the most basic knowledge of the technologies that drive their companies, a learning gap that many in top management now appear eager to bridge. According to a poll of 860 board members conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers, less than 1% have tech experience, but 60% say they plan to spend more time learning about the topic next year. In a CIO.com survey of IT leaders, about 40% said board members "don't really care about IT." CIO.com

- For a successful cloud migration, be sure to look at the big picture
Ensuring a successful migration to the cloud means taking off the blinders and considering both the business and technological implications of the project, says Kurt Milne, managing director of the IT Process Institute. According to Milne -- whose organization recently completed a survey of 143 companies that have made the transition -- making a leap to the cloud should be a group effort that considers the needs and concerns of end users and leverages the expertise of a company's business administration and IT departments. - Cybersecurity measure fails in Senate; Obama mulls executive order
For the second time, a bill to bolster the nation's cybersecurity has failed to pass in the Senate, with senators voting 51-47 against Sen. Joe Lieberman's Cybersecurity Act. Republicans opposed the measure, which would have created voluntary standards for companies involved in critical industries, saying it represented a slippery slope to additional government regulation. Observers say the bill's death makes it that much more likely that President Barack Obama will act unilaterally to strengthen cybersecurity through an executive order. The Hill/Hillicon Valley blog

- Does your company have a coherent social media strategy?
Many companies find that individual departments' social media experiments fail to mesh into a coherent strategy, says Maddie Grant of Social Fish. It takes leadership to get everyone pulling in the same direction. "At the end of the day, there has to be some changes in your internal communication and internal collaboration in order to really optimize and maximize what you’re doing with social media," Grant says. - World's "leggiest" creature lives under a rock in Calif.
Researchers from the University of Arizona have discovered what they believe to be a record-breaking millipede that lives under sandstone boulders in California. The extremely rare lllacme plenipes -- of which only 17 specimens are known to exist -- measures just a few centimeters long, but it carries itself around on 750 legs, more than any other known creature.
