- Report: Google confers with DISH on wireless
Google is said to be among the companies DISH Network
has talked with to leverage the satellite provider's 40 MHz cache of wireless spectrum it wants to use to provide a national wireless service, according to The Wall Street Journal. Also, DISH said that it has won approval from the Third Generation Partnership Project, or 3GPP, working group on the specifications for deploying the spectrum, a move that will allow DISH to work with hardware companies to develop phones and other gear for its network. - Alcatel may sell off patents as cash runs low
Alcatel-Lucent may shed some patents to boost its shrinking cash supply, the telecom gear maker's chief financial officer said Thursday. "It will be hard to find a company with as broad a patent portfolio as ours, so I think it's very attractive and there's a lot of interest and there could be a lot of interest from a lot of different sources," Paul Tufano said at an investor conference. - Leap taps Elliott as COO, adds LTE markets and 4G phones
Leap Wireless tapped its finance chief Jerry Elliot to become president and chief operating officer, just six months after he joined the company. Leap launched Long-Term Evolution services in Philadelphia and Phoenix, as well as six Texas markets. The carrier also introduced the LG Optimus Regard and Samsung Galaxy S III -- its first pair of phones that support the prepaid carrier's LTE network -- as well as new LTE packages. - Google said to be close to launch of its iPhone mapping app
Google is moving closer to its plan to send its new mapping application to Apple's iTunes store for approval, according to a published report, which says the company has already begun testing the app among outsiders. - RIM to push quality of apps across many regions
Research In Motion will launch its BlackBerry 10 operating system early next year with about 100,000 applications by emphasizing the app library's appeal across a wide swath of regions, CEO Thorsten Heins said in an interview. "The tactic we are deploying is by country and by region. We are aiming to have the most important 200 to 400 apps available, because many applications are regional and they really do have a regional flavor," he said. Heins told another interviewer that he was confident carriers would adopt the new BlackBerry phones in order to broaden their menus beyond Apple and Samsung, whose handsets are dominating the market. - Samsung touts 64 GB mobile memory chip as smaller, quicker
Samsung Electronics has introduced a 64-gigabit memory chip for smartphones and tablets that the company claims is 20% smaller and runs one-third faster than preceding chips. - Smaller telecoms are eating into larger carriers prepaid sales
Prepaid sales among the top four U.S. carriers fell 12% in the third quarter from the previous period even as smaller telecoms increased their noncontract numbers 23%, according to a report from the NPD Group, a research firm. The prepaid carriers signed 70% of their subscribers away from one of the major operators, NPD reports. CNET
