- Ball State recognized for comprehensive wellness program
Ball State University was designated a Gold Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association for its Working Well program. The university offers employees one-on-one sessions with a health coach and a registered dietitian, help with quitting smoking, and blood pressure and cholesterol screenings. Other programs include a walking competition and online health assessments. Employee participation is at 78% and growing. The Star Press (Muncie, Ind.)

- Elementary-school students get active with morning workouts
A Nebraska elementary school has partnered with the local YMCA to provide early-morning workouts for students who may not be able to make it to afternoon programs. "Studies have shown that when kids exercise before school, they learn better, they have a better attention span and they listen better at school, so it benefits the teachers and the kids," said YMCA program manager Ray Longoria. - Survey: Most consumers want calorie counts on the menu
Seventy percent of consumers say it matters to them that calorie counts, sodium content and other nutrition information are included on the menu at chain restaurants, and nearly as many would like to see the information available at all restaurants, according to a Technomic survey. - Health panel updates recommendations on HIV screening
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force on Monday called for routine HIV testing for all Americans aged 15 to 65, expanding its 2005 recommendation that included only high-risk individuals. The draft recommendation was prompted by studies showing major health benefits of early HIV treatment, task force chairwoman Virginia Moyer said. USA Today

- Job loss may increase heart attack risk
Adults who were unemployed were at a greater risk of developing acute myocardial infarction, according to a study in the Archives of Internal Medicine. "Although the risks for AMI were most significant in the first year after job loss, unemployment status, cumulative number of job losses and cumulative time unemployed were each independently associated with increased risk for AMI," the researchers wrote. - Lifestyle changes improve BMI, cardio health in young patients
Overweight and obese children and adolescents who underwent lifestyle interventions lost more weight and showed immediate and post-treatment improvements in BMI compared with those who had usual care or minimal interventions, an analysis indicated. Lifestyle interventions were also associated with significant improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure and insulin levels in young patients, researchers reported in the journal Pediatrics. Healthier Together-St. Croix County focuses on addressing community health priorities including access to care, nutrition, obesity and substance abuse through such efforts as water fluoridation, after-school programs, a community garden model and smoking-cessation programs.
