- High-school robotics team finds real-world use for algebra
Park High School's robotics team, the Data Bits, is about much more than tinkering with the mechanical parts of a robot and competing against other high schools. These students from Cottage Grove, Minn., are using classroom algebra in the design and programming of robots. "We use a²+b²=c² all the time," one student said. Students also learn about developing advertisements, fundraising and finding local businesses to form partnerships. Pioneer Press (St. Paul, Minn.)

- Ill. middle school teaches math with "virtual textbooks"
Seventh- and eighth-graders at Eureka Middle School in Illinois are using electronic textbooks as part of a blended-learning approach to teaching math. Teachers developed digital lessons and assignments, including videos, that allow students to work ahead or get extra help. "[Overall], it's been very positive," eighth-grade math teacher Sandy Tignor said. "Not a single eighth-grade student is doing poorly in math. The lowest grade right now is a low B." - N.H. school district tests math programs
The Hooksett School District in New Hampshire is trying out three new math programs -- Math in Focus, Go Math! and Big Ideas -- as potential replacements for Everyday Math and Mathscape, which have drawn criticism from some for being ineffective. However, district officials emphasize they are testing the programs as a way to meet Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The Union Leader (Manchester, N.H.)

- Partnership supports rollout of online math curriculum
Conceptua Math, an online math curriculum designed with the Common Core State Standards in mind, will receive implementation support from the Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education. CORE, which worked with Conceptua Math during the rollout in an Arizona school district, will work specifically with teachers and coaches in school districts using the online math curriculum. T.H.E. - Online coding program targets high-school students
With only about 5% of U.S. high schools offering computer science classes, more work is needed to prepare students for careers in coding where demand for new employees remains high. However, developing a curriculum and finding qualified teachers are often barriers for schools. CodeHS, which has designed an online platform to teach the subject, is aiming to raise enough money to give schools initial access to its program for free while also teaching coding to 1,000 students. - Lower graduation rates are reported under new metric
The U.S. Department of Education used, for the first time, a common metric to calculate graduation rates for all states and the District of Columbia. The statistics, released Monday, reveal the rate at which first-time ninth-grade students earn a high-school diploma within four years. Iowa had the highest graduation rate at 88%, while the rate in Washington, D.C., was the lowest at 59%. Many states reported lower graduation rates than revealed in past calculations, and the data also show gaps in achievement among students. Education Week/Politics K-12 blog
