- Governments need to finance nuclear energy studies
Governments around the world need to fund research into nuclear energy, as it is the best alternative to oil when global supplies dry up, writes Sylvia McLain, who operates a U.K. research lab. Studies on the development of safer reactors and improved containment of radioactive waste are good places to start, McLain writes. The Guardian (London)

- Use intentions to add context to your 2013 goals
Smart bosses try to communicate their intentions, not just broad goals, argues Dana Theus. Sharing intentions lets workers use their judgment to adapt to rapidly changing situations. The Belgian government's decision to impose a nuclear generation tax of 550 million euros for 2011 and 475 million euros for 2012 was criticized by GDF Suez unit Electrabel, which is expected to be primarily affected as it holds most of the country's nuclear capacity. Electrabel said it will study procedures to defend its rights. "GDF Suez believes this unilateral decision is contrary to the protocol signed on October 22, 2009 between the Belgian state and GDF Suez ... which set out a fee of between Eur215 million and Eur245 million for 2010-2014," Electrabel said.
