- CMS rolls out $692M in EHR incentives in Oct.
CMS paid $692 million in EHR incentives to hospitals, doctors and other eligible professionals in October, bringing the total payout to slightly more than $8.4 billion since the program commenced. The agency has paid $2.84 billion in Medicare and Medicaid incentives for physicians and other professionals since early last year, while hospitals received almost $5.38 billion during the same period, CMS said. - CHIME weighs in on OIG EHR incentive payment report
The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives has released a statement in response to a report from the HHS Office of Inspector General that criticized CMS' oversight of the Medicare EHR incentive initiative. The group backs the OIG's suggestion that CMS create and distribute guidance on the documentation needed to comply with audits, but it expressed concern about prepayment audits. "Such an action would impose a significant delay on the payment process, causing an unnecessary and detrimental situation for providers," said Sharon Canner, senior director of advocacy for CHIME. - HIMSS recognizes 2 provider practices' HIT adoption
Coastal Medical and the Dr. Jeremy Bradley Family Practice Center were awarded the 2012 Ambulatory HIMSS Davies Award of Excellence for health IT utilization. Coastal Medical's adoption of an eClinicalWorks EHR helped the practice have a return on investment totaling $17.8 million. - CMS issues quality reporting waivers to storm-hit hospitals
CMS has sent notice to quality improvement organizations notifying them of its plans to waive certain quality reporting requirements for storm-hit hospitals in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.
