- Report blasts officials for misguided focus on smart meters
U.S. government officials at the state and federal levels are being duped into spending billions of dollars to supplement the deployment of smart meters based on the mistaken assumption they will contribute to increased energy efficiency, according to a report. The report attributes the problem to a "fundamental lack of understanding of the problems associated with the future of electricity and energy." Researchers from the National Institute for Science, Law & Public Policy -- which produced the study -- say transitioning to a renewable energy economy requires policy changes such as those implemented in Germany and the Netherlands that rely less on utilities and promote more home-based energy management solutions. - Billing, CIS revenue to hit $4 billion in 5 years, firm projects
The global market for electricity utility billing and customer information systems software and services will grow to about $4 billion in 2017, compared with $2.3 billion last year, according to Pike Research. The worldwide deployment of smart meters will help drive that growth, the market research firm says. "Large U.S. investor-owned utilities looking to develop new revenue streams, European energy retailers working in a deregulated market, and utilities in the developing world seeking to improve revenue collection and energy auditing are all taking a new look at their requirements for billing and CIS," Pike's Eric Woods said. - Natural gas credited for drop in greenhouse gases in New England
A gradual transition to natural gas-powered electricity generation has led to a massive reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across New England, a study finds. According to regional grid administrator ISO New England, levels of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide have decreased more than 50% over the past decade because of increased pollution controls and more dependence on natural-gas power plants. - Feds address tech industry concerns in newest draft cyber order
The Obama administration clarified its position on cybersecurity in response to concerns from the technology sector that a pending executive order could amount to an endorsement for one or more commercial solutions. In an amended draft proposal the White House pledged that its cybersecurity guidance will remain "technology neutral" and called on the Treasury and Commerce departments to consider incentives designed to promote voluntary participation.
