- U.S. should allow industry to exploit oil opportunities, API says
The energy industry should be allowed to make the most of unprecedented opportunities tied to crude oil development, the American Petroleum Institute said. This follows an Energy Information Administration report that stated crude oil output could hit 7.5 million barrels per day by 2020. "But, in order to move forward with this remarkable opportunity, we must avoid public policies that raise taxes, impose burdensome and unnecessary regulations, or pit one energy source against another," said Rayola Dougher, API's senior economic adviser. - Polls show support for fracking in N.Y., Pa.
Two recent polls of residents from New York and Pennsylvania showed growing support for hydraulic fracturing. A Siena College survey found that about 50% of residents of New York City and suburban areas favor upstate drilling, compared with 32% who are against development. A University of Pittsburgh Center for Social and Urban Research poll, meanwhile, found that about 49% of respondents strongly or somewhat support a gas drilling boom in Washington County, Pa. - Black Elk Energy investigates platform blast in Gulf
Black Elk Energy has launched an internal probe of a lethal blast on one of its oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Ensco is seeking ways to attract new workers as the company prepares to launch six new rigs over the next two years. The offshore drilling contractor is hosting overnight get-togethers and dinners in Europe to draw electricians and mechanics and has requested current employees who are military veterans to discuss job opportunities with other ex-service members. Sempra Energy has applied for a permit from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to build export facilities at its Cameron liquefied natural gas terminal in Louisiana. - BLM seeks public input related to Wyo. gas development project
The Bureau of Land Management is requesting public input on a draft environmental study for a major natural gas development venture in Wyoming. About 8,950 new wells would be drilled in the next 15 years in the Continental Divide-Creston project. "We're glad to see it going forward. - Alaska governor, Korea Gas discuss natural gas export prospects
Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell and Korea Gas held discussions about the prospects of natural gas exports from the state to Asia and has scheduled meetings with several other potential buyers of Alaskan gas. In October, ExxonMobil and three other energy firms said they sought to develop a $45 billion gas pipeline and export facility in the state. - Rep. Upton says Exxon isn't serious about support for carbon tax
ExxonMobil's support for a tax on carbon emissions isn't that strong, noted Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich. In November, Exxon said a carbon tax could be crucial in efforts to address increasing emissions. "I sat down with the Exxon folks a couple of months ago and let it be known that this is not a proposal that, certainly under Speaker Boehner [R-Ohio], is going to be coming through in the House," said Upton, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. - Western states craft energy development plan
The Western Governors Association is working on a program that would pave the way for the development of energy resources in western states. Fossil fuels and renewable energy will be considered in the plan, said Rich Halvey, a program director with the association.
