  • Lawmaker: TSA should look at costs, benefits of SPP
Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, D-Miss., wants the Transportation Security Administration to hold off on admitting new airports into its Screening Partnership Program until it can pinpoint costs and benefits and keep a closer watch on the program. The program provides TSA guidance to airports that select private airport screeners. The Washington Post (12/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Column: Don't let holiday travel trigger security fears
As holiday travel picks up, so do concerns about phony boarding passes. Even though people fear terrorists would be able to alter a pass to give themselves access to the Transportation Security Administration's PreCheck program, this editorial notes that other security measures are in place, such as X-rays. • Senator to FAA: Ease device rules, or I'll legislate
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., says she is prepared to propose legislation that will require the Federal Aviation Administration to permit more usage of electronic devices on flights if it doesn't ease up on technology restrictions. "Airline employees have the incredibly important job of keeping us safe in the air -- their efforts are better spent worrying about rules that actually accomplish that goal," the senator said. Earlier this year, the FAA said it was assessing rules on device usage; regulators have said that devices that emit data might interfere with electronic equipment on airplanes. • Airlines press for simplified fare taxes
U.S. airlines are calling for simplified and reduced taxes on ticket fares. The number of taxes per flight has increased from six to 17 since 1980, and the markup discourages travelers from booking flights, says Airlines for America. Reforming airfare taxes is one part of the broader reforms A4A is pursuing in its efforts to create a national airline policy. KGW-TV (Portland, Ore.) (12/11) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
