  • TNT stunt scene makes YouTube's top videos list for 2012
YouTube has released a list of its top videos uploaded in 2012, including a stunt scene in a small Belgian town that was created to drive awareness of dramatic programs on TNT. The TNT video, created last spring to publicize the channel's debut in Belgium, showed a red button with a "Push to Add Drama" sign hanging over it in the middle of a public square. Soon, a curious biker pushed the button and a zany, action-packed series of movielike stunts unfolded before astonished pedestrians. CNET (12/18)

  • How WOMM is helping Fist of Awesome and other indie games
The tools needed to create video games may be more accessible than ever, but so many people are producing games that it's hard for small developers to make their products stand out, game expert Simon Parkin writes. That's why it's important to be passionate about your creation and having a catchy way to explain it so that word-of-mouth marketing can help small titles find an audiences, said Nicholl Hunt, creator of the increasingly popular Fist of Awesome game. "Fist of Awesome is a game that lets you punch a bear in the mouth. That's my hook, most of my marketing material revolves around it, and it's produced a lot of word-of-mouth on that basis alone," Hunt said. PocketGamer.biz (12/18)
  • Buzz gone bad: Starbucks hashtag is hijacked by angry consumers
A Starbucks holiday campaign called #SpreadTheCheer quickly turned against the company after its recent launch on Twitter. The campaign asked customers to share encouraging holiday tweets using the hashtag -- but many used it to attack Starbucks' tax and benefit policies in the U.K. instead. A Starbucks-sponsored ice rink outside the Natural History Museum in London displayed many of the angry tweets, some of which contained profanity, before the company could take them down. • User-generated content is key to driving purchases, study finds
A Wildfire study shows that 83% of consumers have made buying decisions influenced by user-generated content about products -- and suggests that marketers will be more likely to gain Internet users' trust if they design content that fosters social interactions with other users. "Brands that want to encourage readers to create their own content supporting products and services must create online communities where it becomes easier for customers to share information with like-minded consumers," this Brafton piece explains. • Updated Facebook app helps empower local recommendations
Businesses that geocoded Facebook pages that attract good reviews stand to benefit from Facebook's latest mobile application, writes Bill Siwicki. The app has a "Nearby" feature that will help users discover nearby physical stores through geocodes, likes and friends' recommendations on Facebook. "This [feature] shows how important it will be for retailers to have a Facebook page for every store, and to make sure they keep those pages fresh and maintained so that people will like the page," says Nikki Baird of Retail Systems Research LLC.
