- Chance of sudden cardiac death rises with prediabetes
An analysis of data on 2,641 middle-aged men found sudden cardiac death was 1.51 times as likely for those with prediabetes than those with normal glucose levels. For men with type 2 diabetes, the risk was 2.86 times greater. The results appear in Diabetes Care. DailyRx.com

- Weak heart may raise depression risk in men, study finds
Having poor cardiovascular health at age 18 increases by nearly twofold a man's risk of being admitted for major depression later in life, according to a study of more than 1 million men in Sweden. Data showed that the poorer the cardiovascular fitness, the greater the risk of depression. The findings appeared in the British Journal of Psychiatry. DailyRx.com

- Early appointment boosts attendance for cardiac rehabilitation
Setting initial cardiac rehabilitation within 10 days of hospital discharge resulted in an 18% increase in attendance at the orientation session, according to a study published in the journal Circulation. Barely 30% of heart attack patients join such a rehabilitation program after being scheduled within one to four weeks of discharge, researchers said. Reuters

The Mayo Clinic tells expectant parents about pregnancy, birth and the first months of life through an application called Mayo Clinic on Pregnancy. - Enrollment in U.S. nursing schools is on the rise
A report from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing shows increases in nursing-school enrollments in 2012. Entry-level baccalaureate programs grew by 3.5%. RN-to-BSN programs grew 22.2%, an illustration of the increasing demand for nurses with bachelor's degrees, the group said. Nurse.com

- CDC: 150,000 patients exposed to unsafe injections
More than 150,000 patients have received unsafe injections since 2001, with two-thirds of reported cases coming in the past four years, according to data from the CDC. "The lack of oversight in non-hospital settings is a big gap in the regulatory environment," said Evelyn McKnight, who contracted hepatitis at an oncology clinic and now leads the HONOReform foundation, an advocate for safe injections.
