Berries may protect women from heart attacks, nurse study finds
An analysis of data from the Nurses' Health Study II involving 93,600 women found that those who ate the most strawberries and blueberries were 32% less likely to suffer a heart attack than those who got fewer servings. Anthocyanins, antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables, may boost high-density lipoprotein, or "good" cholesterol, researchers said. The findings appear in the journal Circulation. Chronic lung disease may raise bleeding risk in heart attack patients
Chronic lung disease patients who had heart attacks had up to a 25% greater risk of bleeding than patients without lung disease who had heart attacks, according to a study involving more than 150,000 patients in the U.S. Researchers also found that CLD patients with a non-elevated ST had a 20% higher risk of dying during hospitalization. HHS publishes Affordable Care Act regulations
HHS released a 474-page document on Monday with proposed regulations regarding Medicaid expansion, state health insurance exchanges and other pieces of the Affordable Care Act. The draft covers the development of systems for helping people find out whether they are eligible for Medicaid or tax credits for health insurance, and for dealing with denials of Medicaid claims. Neb. lawmaker calls for mandatory newborn cardiac screening
State Sen. Jim Smith of Papillion, Neb., presented on Tuesday a bill requiring hospitals across Nebraska to test newborns for congenital heart problems.
