- Soundbars come to the rescue of HDTV speakers
Soundbars are emerging as a hit product in consumer electronics, offering superior sound compared with the speakers of many high-definition television sets, Phil Lozen writes. "Originally we saw soundbars used as secondary devices in bedrooms or dens," said Chris Henry of Theater and Electronic Solutions in Ann Arbor, Mich. "Now, the only place we really aren’t seeing them is the dedicated theater room. The quality range has really expanded. High-end soundbars can sound as good as traditional speakers in many cases." - NPD: Netflix, connected TVs come together for 40% of households
Netflix's video-streaming service was found in about 40% of the households with an Internet-connected television in the fourth quarter, according to The NPD Group. That level of adoption was even higher with consumers in the 18-to-24 age bracket, at more than 50%, the market research firm reported. "The inherent success of Netflix streaming can be attributed to its content library and TV-centric strategy," NPD's John Buffone wrote. Home Media Magazine

- RIM releases BES 10 to manage BlackBerrys, rivals' smartphones
Following completion of beta tests, Research In Motion has released software for BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10, which the company hopes will keep enterprise clients from straying to competing platforms. RIM said that BES 10 will be able to manage legacy and newer BlackBerry 10-based phones as well as iOS and Android handsets. While RIM touted the software's new features, analysts said its success would depend on the popularity of BB 10 handsets, which the company is scheduled to unveil Jan. 30. Computerworld

- Apple concern: More iPhone buyers looking to cheaper models
Apple will release quarterly earnings today amid fresh concerns stemming from the inclusion of many less expensive older iPhone models among the 6.2 million activations Verizon Wireless reported Tuesday. Carriers have had the ability in recent years to discount the costs of older iPhones. "You had a very low entry point for people to come in on an iPhone that quite honestly never had that ability on the Verizon Wireless network before. It is a price-point issue for consumers," said Fran Shammo, Verizon Communications' chief financial officer. The Wall Street Journal

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology is pushing to consolidate electronics manufacturers in that country, hoping it can produce five to eight companies with at least $16 billion in annual sales in the next three years. Only Huawei Technologies and Lenovo Group currently meet that benchmark, and the consolidation is expected to sweep up underperformers, such as TCL and ZTE, this analysis notes.
