- Global skyscraper completions down in 2012; upward trend for 2013
The number of tall buildings completed around the world declined in 2012, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Only 66 skyscrapers more than 656 feet tall were built last year, down from the 82 finished in 2011. The U.S. completed only two buildings. "As 2012 closes, the industry is on the cusp of another burst of tall building development," the report said. "It is likely the 2013 completion total will set a new record for tall building completions, surpassing the 2011 total." DesignBuildSource.com.au (Australia)

- Shareway: The future of mobility in U.S. mega-cities in 2030
Höweler + Yoon Architecture has developed the "Shareway," a concept that unites communities along Interstate 95 between Boston and Washington D.C., into a mega-region called "Boswash." The concept "focuses on community access and seeks to bundle transport into a highly technical, optimized and continually flowing main artery," Donna Taylor writes. The artery is like a stacked highway, with each level serving different transportation needs. "Through a combination of physical infrastructure (hardware) and intelligent networks (software), Shareway makes travel effortless and reconfigures the structure of cities and suburbs," the architects note. "Proximity is a function of time and location. Geography is negotiated by speed. Distance is displaced by access. Convenience is remapped through new forms of conveyance." Gizmag

- Green roof to emphasize form of faith-based center in Japan
Concrete portions of the roof of a planned community center in Kyoto, Japan, will sport vegetation to emphasize the "figure 8" form of the building while reducing its environmental impact. The green roof is expected to help manage stormwater runoff, while increasing the insulation of the building. Other parts of the roof will be made of flexible, transparent, glazed panels held up by cable nets. EarthTechling.com

- Tackling "big data" in AEC firms
The use of building information modeling has increased. This means AEC firms need to keep track of even more data than ever, and storing it in various places means not all can know what information is where. So some have turned to collaboration technology that lives in the cloud. Constructech (free registration)
