Kmart is working to combat declining same-store sales as sister chain Sears starts to see improvements, a challenge for investor Edward Lampert as he takes on the CEO role. Lampert acquired Kmart in 2003, combining it with Sears two years later in a $12.3 billion deal. The Wall Street Journal

- Dollar General to add 11,000th store in 2013
Dollar General, which already has more stores than any other U.S. retailer, will add 635 locations and pass the 11,000-store mark later this year, the company said. Men's outerwear and knitwear abounded at New York's market shows this week, with many of the collections building on last year's hot styles rather than breaking new ground, retail buyers say. - Survey: More than 179 million Americans gearing up for Super Bowl
A record number of people intend to celebrate the first-ever Super Bowl featuring two brothers facing off as head coaches. According to a new survey by NRF’s Retail Advertising and Marketing Association, more than 179 million Americans will watch the biggest game of the year on Sunday, Feb. 3, the most in the survey’s nine-year history. The average enthusiast will spend more than $68 on everything from new televisions to snacks and apparel. Total sending is expected to reach $12.3 billion. Read more.
