- How to be prepared when the recruiter comes calling
Search firms are looking for both fit and style when they bring in a candidate for top higher-education positions, says Daniel Parker, principal in Parker Executive Search. For candidates, that means they must research not just the school and the position, but the search firm itself to ensure their style will fit with both. "Regardless of how you got into the pool, it's your responsibility to be prepared," said Lisa Campos, who was recruited into her job at Northern Arizona University. - Leadership transitions can be tricky for applicants
Interviewing for administrative leadership positions can be fraught with challenges, especially when deans, presidents or other leaders suddenly resign, Gene Fant writes in this blog post. Fant recounts the time when a university president quit just as he was applying for a job, and he advises caution for applicants in such situations. "Each of these positions typically serves at the pleasure of the next level of administration, so it is risky business to continue, particularly if the leadership transition is an unhappy one," he concludes. - Where to go when your job search is dragging
The library is an underrated place for job seekers to recharge, Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter writes. Libraries sometimes offer classes and other resources for job seekers, but more importantly they offer a much-needed change of scenery. "The simplicity, the order, even the aroma of a library has appeal for some who simply need calm outside of the storm that often swirls around you at your home," she writes. GlassDoor.com

- Are online courses the best way to cut costs for universities?
Higher education will have to do more with less in the future, says Molly Corbett Broad, president of the American Council on Education. More colleges and universities soon may cut costs by offering more online courses as government funding and donations dry up. "Even the market leading institutions have diminished prospects for revenue growth, and most universities are going to have to lower their cost structure," Broad said. Superior Telegram (Wis.)

- More students enroll in community colleges for STEM education
Students are turning to community colleges to enhance their skills, especially for careers in science, technology, engineering and math, even after completing another degree. "A lot of the STEM fields are occupationally defined programs that lead directly to employment. With many of our two-year associate programs, students enter our colleges and immediately begin studying in the field that they plan to work in," said Chris Mullins, program director for policy analysis with the American Association of Community Colleges. - Bowles: Fix U.S. debt or higher education will suffer
Former president of the University of North Carolina, Erskine Bowles, says in this interview that higher education must get "the biggest bang for the taxpayer bucks," especially in a time of dwindling state support. "[F]ixing our debt and our deficit is not optional. It is mandatory. For all of us who are concerned about the education of our young people, this issue should be at the top of the list," Bowles said. Forbes/Entrepreneurs blog
