  • T-Mobile exec: We're not behind in the national LTE rollout
Contrary to popular belief, T-Mobile USA is not lagging rival carriers in building a nationwide 4G network, Senior Vice President Frank Sickinger asserted in an interview. "My belief is our [LTE launch] timing is perfect. If you look at the pioneering work, there were a lot of misfires," he said, adding that the carrier has already lit up a bunch of sites with Long-Term Evolution technology but will wait until the entire network is completed before making public disclosures. Spectrum gained from the failure of its merger with AT&T has helped T-Mobile convert its 37,000 HSPA+ sites to LTE Advanced for a late 2013 launch, Sickinger said. Clearwire CEO Erik Prusch offered an update after Tuesday's earnings report on the service provider's Long-Term Evolution build, saying it has been testing LTE-TDD (also known as TD-LTE) for more than a year in Phoenix, Ariz. He said that more than 800 LTE-TDD sites are in place to connect to Sprint Nextel's core network with a goal of reaching 2,000 by June and 5,000 by year-end on the way toward deploying 8,000 4G sites. "Early tests of our LTE sites have produced peak downlink speeds of 60 megabits per second," Prusch told analysts. Light Reading Mobile (2/13) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Microsoft CFO: No turning back on wireless strategy
Microsoft may have not made much headway when it comes to its mobile strategy, but there is no alternative plan, Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein told an investor conference on Wednesday. "It's less 'Plan B' than how you execute on the current plan," he said when asked about other options to its Surface tablet and Windows Phone pursuits. Klein said Microsoft's new Windows 8 platform is perfectly suited to offer a wide array of screen sizes, from 4 to 13 inches. He added that the company's foray into making a tablet will help, rather than alienate, its hardware partners because it "allows us to innovate in ways in which we couldn't before."
