  • Karzai: U.S. special forces must leave Afghan province
Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Sunday ordered that U.S. special forces cease operations in the eastern Afghanistan province of Wardak within two weeks. Karzai said U.S. forces had been involved in operations where Afghans were tortured or abused, a charge that NATO said there was no evidence of. "We take all allegations of misconduct seriously and go to great lengths to determine the facts surrounding them," said German Gen. Gunter Katz, a spokesman for coalition forces in the region. • Opinion: White House appears to prefer timid generals
Marine Gen. James Mattis, who leads U.S. Central Command, is being replaced by the Obama administration despite an admirable performance record, Mackubin Thomas Owens writes. The decision, which may be due to Mattis' disagreements with the White House over Iran and the Middle East, reflects Obama's recent preference for military leaders who won't object to military spending cuts. "By pushing Gen. Mattis overboard, the administration sent a message that it doesn't want smart, independent-minded generals who speak candidly to their civilian leaders," Owens writes. "This is a very unusual and singular moment in Marine Corps history." USA Today (2/24) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Sequester may force base commissaries to close on Wednesdays
If sequestration cuts go into effect, base commissary stores will close on Wednesdays beginning in late April, officials say. "While certainly not a pleasant prospect for any of us, [the actions] are nonetheless unavoidable should sequestration occur," Defense Commissary Agency Director Joseph Jeu wrote in a memo. It is wonderful how much news there is when people write every other day; if they wait for a month, there is nothing that seems worth telling."
